Reading Month – Week Two Brings Books, Role Models, and Community Connections

Week two of Reading Month at Bunche Preparatory Academy continued the excitement as students experienced literacy in new and engaging ways. From special guest readers to creative themed days, the school community came together to celebrate the power of reading and learning.

One of the highlights of the week was when our middle school students stepped into leadership roles by reading to our younger students. The older students proudly shared books with the little ones, creating a special moment of connection across grade levels. The younger students loved the attention and stories, while the middle schoolers modeled strong reading skills and confidence. These moments help build a culture where students see themselves as readers, leaders, and role models.

Bunche also welcomed students from Martin Luther King Jr. High School, who visited classrooms to read with our students. Seeing high school students return to support younger learners showed our students what their future can look like and reminded everyone that reading remains an important skill at every stage of education.

The week also featured a fun Character Day, where students and staff dressed as their favorite book characters. One very special visitor made the day even more exciting when Captain Underpants made an appearance, bringing smiles and laughter throughout the school while celebrating the joy and humor that books can bring.

In addition to literacy celebrations, Bunche students also participated in an important learning opportunity when members of the local police department visited the school. Officers spoke with students about the dangers of vaping and shared important information about how young people can protect themselves and make healthy choices. These conversations help students build awareness, confidence, and decision-making skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Events like these reflect Bunche’s commitment to educating the whole child while supporting the goals of Detroit Public Schools Community District’s Blueprint 2027, which emphasizes strong literacy skills, community partnerships, and preparing students for success both in and out of the classroom.

With two exciting weeks complete, Reading Month at Bunche continues to grow stronger. Students are discovering that reading is not only an academic skill—it is a way to connect with others, explore new ideas, and build a bright future.
