Reading Month Kicks Off with Excitement at Bunche Preparatory Academy

Bunche Preparatory Academy launched Reading Month with energy, creativity, and a strong sense of community as students and staff celebrated the joy of books throughout the first week. From themed spirit days to special guest readers, the school set the tone for a month focused on literacy, imagination, and a love of learning.

Students showed their enthusiasm by participating in fun spirit days, including Pajama Day, where many arrived cozy and ready to read, and Twin Day, where friends and classmates dressed alike while sharing their favorite books together. The hallways were filled with excitement as classrooms took time to highlight the importance of reading in both academic success and everyday life.

The week also welcomed several special guests who helped inspire students through storytelling and conversation. Detroit’s Mayor visited Bunche to read to students, sharing the importance of literacy and how reading helps open doors to opportunity. Students were also honored to welcome DPSCD Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti and his wife, who spent time with students talking about the value of education and reading aloud to classrooms.

Adding to the excitement, students had the opportunity to learn from Deaf storyteller and advocate Teddy Dorsette, who engaged students through storytelling and shared the importance of language, culture, and communication. His visit was especially meaningful for Bunche’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing community and highlighted how stories can be shared in many powerful ways.

Another favorite activity was the Mystery Reader event, where special guests surprised classrooms by stopping in to read their favorite books. The mystery element kept students guessing and created memorable moments that reinforced how reading can bring people together.

Events like Reading Month reflect Bunche Preparatory Academy’s commitment to fostering strong readers and lifelong learners. By encouraging students to engage with books in fun and meaningful ways, the school continues to support the goals of Detroit Public Schools Community District’s Blueprint 2027, which emphasizes strong literacy skills and academic growth for all students.

At Bunche, reading is more than just a classroom activity—it is a celebration of curiosity, creativity, and opportunity. With such an exciting start, the rest of Reading Month promises even more opportunities for students to explore new stories and strengthen their love for reading.
